The Velvet Underground are a popular psychedelic band. Their song Heroin is considered to be one of the best songs of all time, but despite its name was not intended to promote the use of heroin. When fans told them that they had used heroin while listening to the song, frontman Lou Reed was saddened. The cover of their album The Velvet Underground and Nico, also known as the Banana Album due to it being merely a picture of a banana, was designed by pop artist Andy Warhol and originally featured the ability to "peel slowly and see". Doing so revealed a flesh colored innard of the banana, an obvious double entendre.

Their song Venus in Furs was the inspiration for the name of alternative rock band The Psychedelic Furs.

Reed went on to have a successful solo career. His Walk on the Wild Side was a hit, but had to be censored for airplay due to a sexual lyric. Shortly after his death, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist, despite having already been inducted with the band.
