Johnny Otis was a singer, songwriter, musician, composer, bandleader, disc jockey, producer, TV show host, artist, author, journalist, minister, and impresario. Known as the original "King of Rock and Roll" before that title was bestown upon Elvis Presley. Dominated the R&B charts in the early fifties. Helped several artists achieve stardom. Willie and the Hand Jive was his biggest hit at number nine. The song was covered by Eric Clapton and the original features Earl Palmer. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a nonperformer. Other artists who covered Hand Jive include New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Grateful Dead. The song features the clave sound popularized by Bo Diddley.
