Early rock and roll group named as a pun on Haley's Comet. Initially only Haley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, after many years it was discovered that the Hall had inducted Smokey Robinson without his backing group The Miracles. Because Robinson's debut solo record had been released less than 25 years prior to his induction, it was deemed to have been in violation of the Hall's induction criteria. A special committee was formed to correct this, and included other long neglected backing groups. These included the Comets. The group is noted for its hit Rock Around the Clock, considered the first rock and roll hit. They also had a hit with Shake, Rattle, and Roll, a censored version of a song by Big Joe Turner.
